Though the Explorit Science Center has evolved over a twenty-five year period, including a name change and a relocation, it has remained committed to its core mission. It continues to focus on teaching the impact of science on everyday life in a friendly, fun and casual setting. Located in the town of Davis, California just miles from the
renowned UC Davis campus, the center has a world of science experts right in their own backyard. The center remains a popular place among the UC faculty, who frequently donate their time in order to help the center develop more effective programs.
Explorit's hands-on approach, attracts those individuals who are especially curious about the natural world and how they fit into it. Naturally, school age children flock to the center daily, but the center continues to purposely appeal to a larger community, both young and old alike. To build upon the existing appeal of Explorit, it was decided that the visual identity of the center be updated. The new identity needed to easily make a strong connection to the visitors and reflect the spirit of the center.
Rather than employing overused scientific symbols or abstract concepts, a friendly, bouncing green grasshopper was developed. This happy-go-lucky character not only embodies the exuberance of the science center but, it adds another dimension of fun to the science lessons by becoming a non-threatening companion, helping visitors to feel more comfortable about learning new concepts.
A broad system was developed to incorporate the new icon throughout the science center, including business cards, stationery, banners, way-finding system and apparel.
